Citypost Wi-Fi Terms
The short version
- Free public Wi-Fi with fair-use limits.
- We encrypt our network links, but public Wi-Fi can be intercepted, so use HTTPS or a VPN for anything sensitive.
- We never read your traffic for ads or sell browsing data.
Who we are
These policies are provided by Pivotal Intelligence LLC, a Smart City Media company (“Pivotal Intelligence,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). “Smart City Media” means Smart City Media LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates other than Pivotal Intelligence. “Affiliates” means Smart City Media and any entity that controls, is controlled by, or is under common control with Pivotal Intelligence.
Pivotal Intelligence operates the Citypost™ digital kiosks, the Citypost mobile app, the Campaign Manager advertising platform, the kiosk sensor network, the Citypost Wi-Fi service, and this website (together, the “Services”).
These Citypost™ Wi-Fi Terms (“Wi-Fi Terms”) govern your use of the free public Wi-Fi service offered at Citypost kiosks (the “Wi-Fi Service”). They are part of our Terms of Service. By selecting “I Accept” or by using the Wi-Fi Service, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not connect.
1. Who can use it
The Wi-Fi Service is open to the public. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or legal guardian has agreed to these Wi-Fi Terms for you.
2. Acceptable use
You must follow our Acceptable Use Policy. On the Wi-Fi Service specifically, you must not:
- place an unreasonable or disproportionate load on the network, or run servers, relays or file-sharing at a scale that degrades service for others;
- intercept, monitor, or attempt to access other users' traffic or devices;
- operate rogue access points or impersonate the Citypost network;
- tamper with, disable or circumvent any security measure;
- transmit malware or attack any system;
- use the Wi-Fi Service for any unlawful, harassing, abusive or fraudulent purpose.
3. Fair use limits
To share the network fairly, we may limit session length, the number of sessions per day, bandwidth and data usage, and we may filter content that is unlawful or that our Municipal Partner requires us to block. Session length and daily limits are set with the location partner that hosts each kiosk, so they may vary by location, and are shown on the Wi-Fi connection page.
4. How we protect the network, and what you should know
Our captive portal and all connections from kiosks to our network and cloud are encrypted, and we are moving them to post-quantum-protected TLS as described in our Security & Quantum Readiness statement. The Wi-Fi Service is an open public network, so the wireless connection between your device and the kiosk is not encrypted by the network itself. We plan to offer a secure, encrypted network option in the future.
However, public Wi-Fi is a shared environment, and wireless signals can be intercepted. Over-the-air encryption on public networks depends on industry standards that do not yet include post-quantum protection. Use websites and apps that encrypt end to end (look for HTTPS) or a VPN for anything sensitive, and keep your device's security updates current. You are responsible for securing your own device and data.
5. What we monitor, and what we don't
To operate and secure the Wi-Fi Service, we process limited network metadata: hashed or rotated device identifiers, connection times, data volume, and which kiosk you used. We use automated tools to detect attacks, malware and abuse.
We do not inspect the content of your communications for advertising or profiling, sell your browsing data, or use it to target ads. We access or disclose network information only (a) to protect the security and integrity of the Wi-Fi Service and its users, (b) to enforce these Wi-Fi Terms, or (c) when required by law or valid legal process. Retention periods are listed in our Privacy Notice.
6. Service availability
The Wi-Fi Service is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available.” Speeds vary and service may be interrupted. We may change, limit, suspend or end the Wi-Fi Service, or your access to it, at any time, including to protect the network or other users.
7. Disclaimers, liability and disputes
Sections 12 (Disclaimers), 13 (Limitation of liability) and 15 (Resolving disputes, New York law) of the Terms of Service apply to the Wi-Fi Service. Municipal Partners that host Citypost kiosks are third-party beneficiaries of those protections.
8. Privacy
Our Privacy Notice explains how we handle information collected through the Wi-Fi Service.
